Twin-sized dinosaur-themed crazy quilt for my newest cousin on my Dad’s side of the family, little Cooper, in the tradition of our great grandmother’s crazy quilts.

Megan (mom) loves dinos so that’s the baby theme, in green, grey, and teal. My Uncle Ken and Aunt Jackie asked me to make it, and purchased the fabric for the quilt. My time and the creation are my part of the gift.

54 crazy 9-1/2” (9” finished) blocks with borders.

Foundation blocks and backing are from a cotton twin sheet set I found on sale. All other fabric purchased from fabric.com. Each block started with a Dino square in the center (ish), for a fun focus, a bit different than a regular crazy quilt. The white accents in the “Dino Glow” fabrics glow in the dark, and there is at least 1 piece of that fabric in each block. The borders are also this fabric line, so they glow, too.

No batting in this one since it’s already pretty thick with the foundation squares and crazy piecing (plus, the quilt is now in New Mexico, so I didn’t want it too heavy).

Machine quilted (not long arm) stitch in the ditch around all blocks, then around some of the pieces, usually in a kind of spiral. Grey top-thread, variegated blue bobbin. Then free-motion around the center dinos and in the top border, using either a beige-copper-brown variegated thread or the variegated blue thread for top-thread and the blue for bobbin.

Label is a favorite meme and it’s too cute!

The binding is pieced, using leftover scraps of what I had already cut for the blocks, so it alternates between each of the fabrics. Kinda fun and funky!

The quilt was delivered to Dustin, Megan, and Cooper in December while we were on a trip to New Mexico.

Working with my hands is a common coping mechanism for me at this time of year (S.A.D. on top of chronic depression, anxiety, and migraines). This project was definitely a bright place for me. It was a fun surprise to create!
